OCRF White Shirt Campaign event - Friday 1 May 2015

Since the year 2000, Witchery have been creating a very special collection of white shirts released just in time for winter each year. A fresh, modern and tailored collection of beautiful staples to add to your wardrobe.
The special thing about these shirts however, is that 100% of their sales are donated to the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation (the OCRF). OCRF is Australia’s pre-eminent body supporting ovarian cancer research, and Witchery’s collaboration with OCRF is an important one. Every day, every ten hours, one brave woman loses her battle with ovarian cancer. There is no cure. There is no early detection test.

Last Friday I attended a cocktail party at Rydges Capital Hill in Canberra. The ticketed event aimed to raise funds for OCRF, an organisation I am familiar with due to my time as an employee at Witchery.

Host Lisa Robey
We were greeted with a warm smile by Lisa Robey - OCRF ambassador, blogger at Blithe Moments blithemoments.blogspot.com.au and host of Friday’s event. Touchasoul Duo provided the soundtrack – rich vocals and relaxed rhythms. Perfect for the Friday evening post-work crowd. After redeeming my free drink voucher for a delicious glass of red wine, myself and the rest of the guests were treated to canapé’s. A beautiful array of prizes were on display, and raffle tickets were being sold around the room. The atmosphere warm, and all the guests smiling and happy to be there.

Lisa began her address to the audience by thanking everyone for their support and attendance. She didn’t want to interrupt our networking, but wanted to share her reasons for hosting the event.

Lisa’s story is personal. Her ties to the OCRF coming from a place of heartbreak for Lisa and her family. I was incredibly moved by the story – one which tells of a woman who had absolutely no idea she was even ill, and after diagnosis, died a short two months later from ovarian cancer. This is the case for most women who suffer from the disease, and it is why it is so important for us to find a way to test for it.

Despite the tears around the room, Lisa remained poised, and spoke with conviction of her quest to help find a way for early detection. Her efforts raised over $1500 last week, with estimated total funds raised for the OCRF White Shirt Campaign 2015 reportedly over $1milion this year already. An amazing feat for a worthy cause.
